Counselling - Questions and Answers
Q. Is counselling right for everyone?
The simple answer is No. Everyone has different reasons for seeking talking therapy and will want to take different aspects away with them. I ask my clients to be very honest and sometimes that can seem very daunting and vulnerable. For some, especially where there is recent trauma or bereavement, it may be too soon for them to be able to speak about their difficulties. Therapy is an individual journey and the assessment process does ensure that clients are ready to work at a deep relational depth.
Q. By law, you do not have to be qualified to be a counsellor and anyone can call themselves a therapist. Are you qualified?
Absolutely! I hold a a first-class (honours) Bachelor of Science degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Approaches but, before that, went to college for nearly four years and gained a level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling as awarded by the 'Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body' . I also holds a diploma in counselling children and adolescents and a diploma in counselling in the workplace (included EAP and online therapy). I maintain regular supervision and adhere to the ethical guidelines as set out by the 'British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy'.
Q. How do I get a referral?
You can call or email to make an appointment. There may be a waiting list in which case, you will be informed as to how long you may have to wait.
Q. What if we don't get on and we feel we can't work together?
In the first instance I would explore this with you and consider where the issues are arising from. However, if we did not feel that it was possible to work together, I would respectfully end the working agreement and where possible signpost to another therapist or support network.
Q. Are my sessions completely confidential?
Yes I take confidentiality very seriously - although certain exceptions apply. Should you disclose that you are harming yourself or someone else, you raise a safeguarding issue, you inform me that you are committing acts of terrorism, money laundering or drug trafficking; I am duty bound to breach confidentiality. However, where possible this will be discussed with you before breaking our agreement.
Q. What if I am late for my appointment or don't turn up?
I always wait for my clients for fifteen minutes after their appointment time and understand that problems crop up. However due to the knock-on effect of the next appointment, I will still have to end the session at the scheduled time. Where less than 24 hours’ notice is given, a charge is made for a full session. Where lateness becomes a frequent problem, there may be the need to re-visit the working contract and consider some changes.
Q. Can I bring my children to counselling?
Your counselling session is your opportunity for space and time to reflect on your emotional difficulties. A counselling environment is not always appropriate for children but there are times when you may wish them to accompany you. I am happy to accommodate children where the need arises.
Q. How many sessions will I need?
That very much depends on the individual. Some will feel that one session is enough for them whilst others will work over a period of years. An issue that has taken years to develop is unlikely to reach a stage of acceptance in a therapeutic hour. With six weekly reviews Anna can ensure that you are on track. You may end your sessions when you wish but Anna would always advise a planned ending.
Q. I am a parent and I want to know what's happening in my son/daughters counselling session.
Due to confidentiality, provided your child is ‘Gillick competent’ unless your child discloses something which may raise a safeguarding concern, I cannot disclose any information at all. She is ethically bound to the BACP codes of conduct and takes confidentially and the trust of clients very seriously.
Q. How do I pay for therapy?
You can pay by cash, bank transfer or by credit/debit card or via the website on the payment page using the PayPal system. Online sessions (where clients are solely remote) should be paid for in advance.
